SHARES Lecture: ‘A Marxist approach to state responsibility’, by Bill Bowring
On 19 June 2014, Professor Bill Bowring will give a lecture entitled: ‘A Marxist approach to state responsibility’.
Bill Bowring is Professor of Law at Birkbeck, University of London, and is a practising barrister at Field Court Chambers, Gray’s Inn.
He joined the Law School in 2006, and is currently Director of Mooting, the Teaching Laboratory, and Director of the LLM/MA in Human Rights. He is also a Fellow of the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex, a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Northampton. Previously he held posts at the University of East London, University of Essex (where he was Director of the Pan-European Institute from 1997-2000), and the London Metropolitan University (where he was Director of the Human Rights and Social Justice Research Institute from 2003-2006).
Professor Bowring has frequently acted as a court expert, as an expert for the Council of Europe, OSCE, European Union, United Nations, as well as advised the UK government. He has extensive professional practice representing applicants and appearing in the European Court of Human Rights. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Law and Critique, a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Historical Materialism, and a member of the Advisory Committee to the London Review of International Law.
His research interests include human rights, minority rights, international law, and the law and practice of Russia and the countries of the Former Soviet Union, and Eastern and Central Europe. He has many publications on topics of international law, human rights, and the law of Russia and other Former Soviet Union countries.
