Global actors convene in Sendai for United Nations Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction: international cooperation vital for development and climate change agenda

A number of national and international actors are currently gathered in the Japanese city of Sendai for the United Nations Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. The Conference assesses ten years of global cooperation to curb the impact of disasters, and aims to update and create an effective global prevention framework that utilises a variety of sectors. India and Seychelles sign four agreements to foster shared responsibility for maritime security in the region

India and the Indian Ocean island of Seychelles strengthened their ties as the two states signed four agreements. The four pacts relate to cooperation in various areas including hydrography, renewable energy, infrastructure development, sale of navigation charts and electronic navigational charts, and boosting maritime security. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the strong security partnership between the countries had enabled them to fulfill their ‘shared responsibility to advance maritime security in the region’. Antiquities ministry reiterates calls for international community to intervene after reports of new attack on ancient city of Dur Sharrukin

‘We have warned previously and warn now that these gangs with their sick, takfiri ideology will continue to destroy and steal artefacts as long as there is no strong deterrent, and we still await a strong international stand to stop the crimes of Daesh that are targeting the memory of humanity,’ the Iraqi antiquities ministry stated, referring to the militant group by its Arabic acronym. Security Council responds to calls for continued international support in Libya, extends mandate for the UN Mission

The United Nations Security Council extended the mandate for the UN mission to Libya, determining that the conflict remains a threat to international peace and security. Acting under Chapter VII of the Charter the Council voted unanimously for the extension which secures the continued presence of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The mission will continue to be led by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Bernardino León, and will remain ‘in full accordance with the principles of Libyan national ownership’.
