Columbian government and FARC guerrillas assume responsibility for war victims

During peace negotiations on 7 June, the Columbian government and guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) both agreed to assume responsibility for war victims. During the conflict between the Colombian state and FARC, which started in 1964, more than 200,000 people were killed and many people were wounded and displaced. (more…)

Pepsi and Coca-Cola issue new policies on land grabs; NGOs say action by states required

After a critical report by Oxfam last year, two world players in the sugar industry – Coca-Cola and Pepsi – have published new policies on land grabs by their suppliers. In March 2014, Pepsi announced ‘a land policy with zero tolerance for illegal activities in our supply chain and for land displacements of any legitimate land tenure holders’. Coca-Cola made a similar announcement late last year. (more…)

Congolese African Union peacekeepers accused of human rights violations in CAR

On 2 June, Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated that African Union peacekeepers from the Republic of Congo who are stationed in the Central African Republic have been accused of committing human rights abuses, including torture, killings and detentions. The allegations were made by witnesses, local officials and residents who were interviewed during an investigation by HRW. (more…)

Defense Minister of Vietnam urges states to share responsibility for peace

At the 13th IISS Asian Security Summit on 31 May, Vietnam’s Defense Minister, General Tanh, delivered a speech stating – according to Vietnam Breaking News – that in order to manage risks that may cause disputes, all countries should share the same perspective on international responsibilities. Report: serious health risks to children in Australian detention centres on Nauru

A confidential report that was obtained by The Guardian Australia documents the desperate state of healthcare for families in Australian detention facilities on Nauru. The report writes that children on Nauru do not receive an adequate health screening and that up to 50 percent of them could carry latent tuberculosis. Furthermore, it raises serious worries that Nauru does not have a child protection framework in place, that there is a significant risk that children are sexually abused and that most pregnant women have a depression.
