EU states urged to rethink migration policies and to share responsibility for search and rescue programmes

In attempting to seal their borders, European nations are facing an ‘impossible’ task, the UN independent expert on the human rights of migrants wrote in an open letter to the EU’s Committee on Fundamental Rights and Freedoms, as he encouraged the EU to identify new legal channels of migration in an effort to save lives. ‘Sealing international borders is impossible, and migrants will continue arriving despite all efforts to stop them, at a terrible cost in lives and suffering’, Special Rapporteur François Crépeau wrote.  (more…)

Foreign Minister of Burkina Faso: shared responsibility to fight ‘plagues’

Djibril Bassolé Yipènè, Foreign Minister of Burkina Faso said that in the Sahel region, armed conflicts become more complex and are radicalised because of the emergence of violent extremism and terrorism, which are closely associated with organised crime, particularly in the areas of drug trafficking, arms trafficking and human trafficking. Liberia agrees to stop cutting down its trees in return for Norwegian development aid

Australia and Cambodia sign refugee resettlement agreement

On 26 September, Australia’s Immigration Minister Scott Morrison and Cambodia’s Interior Minister Sar Kheng, signed a controversial agreement, aimed at resettling asylum-seekers in Cambodia, a country criticised for its deteriorating human rights record. (more…)
